RE: Agreed on the importance of clear direction & marketing.. ~Hank Nimtumiplop 4.Oct.02 04:21 PM a Web browser Notes Client 6.0All Platforms
EMail does not count (though you may not have been refering to that).
When we think of Notes, as developers, we need to stop thinking of it as email - I wish there were a clear license count that did not include email only users. One thing Lotus could do, which I have seen others suggest in this forum, is to rip out the email client and make a clear product deliniation. I think that would be a step in the right direction (definately not a fix though).
But regarding your response. It sounds like your geographic area must be experiencing some great Notes stuff. But unfortunately, the Notes *application* industry as a whole is sinking.
But you don't have to take my word for it. There are some very high profile indicators that can easily be researched:
1) General Notes job market compared to other technology (even exchange) - not recession issues, just Notes stuff compared to others. Compare the "percent" today to what it was years ago. It will be less (Not talking numebers - number of jobs is down for all technology).
2) Seriously high profile "ship jumping" from some very large and influential business partners.
3) Very public statements from from large influential application oriented business partners against IBM. Check out gwi.com - there is a very "open" letter from the president as to why they added .net technology. Remember, .net offers far less in revenue currently. But they plan on making that technology the driving force behind all features. You don't stake a business future on something new if you beleive your current product line will support your future existance. They were one of the largest players for years.
4) General conversations with other developers - outside this forum. I have found that there are a lot of people that only review this forum and never post (including me until these "direction" posts started with R6).
5) First hand experience with both large and small companies making decisions to move email to anything but Notes, and redevelop apps.
